I’m looking for some large sections of plexiglass to retrofit secondary glazing to some windows (before they are eventually replaced in a year or two).
I was referred to https://bouwplastics.nl/ but I wonder if anyone can recommend a better (cleaper) supplier?
You may want to check out tomsold.nl although that site can be quite challenging to navigate and the way they sell things is… just weird. Hint: the strip underneath the logo can be dragged left and right.
Are you sure you want plexiglass/acrylic, though? It’s quite flammable and can sag when heated e.g. in direct sunlight. In many cases, lexan/polycarbonate (called “tijgerglas” by Tom Sold) is a better option. It’s more expensive by volume, but you can often get away with much thinner sheets because they don’t break, and then the price is on par.
Tom Sold were nice enough to quote 650 including cutting and delivery. Still undecided though as it’s a 1-2 year temporary solution, almost exceeds the possible savings I think.
Does anyone have any strong view in these hairdryer kits you get at hardware stores? Does the same thing but with thin plastic sheets. Plan b is this and spending money on better insulating curtains that we will keep long term.
That’s what I thought, but keep in mind the windows are massive, close to 2m x 2m area in 2 rooms. I’ve ordered some of this clingfilm type stuff for €30 so I can see if it helps. Better to spend on the curtains. Maybe I’ll see some stats in Home Assistant - should be able to plot outside temp vs room temperature and watch the rate of change!
When I replaced single-pane cast iron windows and frames with triple-pane aluminium windows over the front side of my house (about a 12m2 area) I saved 15 EUR/month. Just to give an idea, every house is different and your windows might have a lot more (or less) influence.
I have some of the cling film stuff too, if you need more than what you ordered. My experience with it is that it’s quite effective, especially as a temporary solution.
